Securing Public Safety Communications on Commercial and Tactical 5G Networks: A Survey and Future Research Directions

The forthcoming communication networks for public safety authorities rely on the fifth generation (5G) of mobile networking technologies. Police officers, paramedics, border guards, as well fire and rescue personnel, will connect through commercial operator's access network rapidly deployable tactical bubbles. This transition from closed dedicated infrastructure to hybrid architecture expand threat surface expose mission-critical applications sensitive information cyber physical adversaries. We explore survey security enablers prioritized in 5G networks. identify scenarios analyze enabling vulnerabilities, actors, attacks vectors, risk levels. Security are surveyed core networks, infrastructure, applications, starting push-to-talk group video leading situational-awareness remote-controlled systems. Two solutions trialed described more detail: remote attestation enhanced control constrained devices, securing satellite backhauls. also discuss future research directions highlighting need automate rapid deployments, military-grade cost-effective customizations services ensure robustness, hardening various types equipment.
